Step into Middle-earth

New Zealand’s landscapes didn’t just inspire Middle-earth, they became it. Rolling farmland, alpine valleys and wild coastlines all played a part in bringing the story to life. Some experiences take you directly onto film sets like Hobbiton. Others guide you through real locations used in the films, where scenes were shaped by the landscape itself. You might stand where the Fellowship travelled, walk through valleys that became Isengard, or fly into remote terrain that formed the Misty Mountains. There are also behind-the-scenes experiences, where you can see how the films were created, from props and costumes to the craftsmanship behind the world itself. Whether you’re a dedicated fan or simply drawn to the landscapes, this is a different way to explore New Zealand, one that connects places with story.

Hobbiton

Hobbiton is where Middle-earth stops feeling like a film and starts feeling real. The Shire has been permanently recreated in the Waikato countryside, with every detail carefully maintained.

A guided tour takes you through hobbit holes, gardens and pathways that feel exactly as they appear on screen, finishing at the Green Dragon Inn. It’s a fully immersive experience, where you’re not just seeing a location, but walking through a complete set.

This is one of the few places where you step directly into the world of the films.

Here, the scale of Middle-earth becomes clear, with landscapes that feel vast, cinematic and largely unchanged from how they appear on screen.
