Auckland to Wellington

A rewarding North Island road trip that moves from farmland to geothermal landscapes and volcanic high country before finishing in Wellington. Travel south from Auckland through the Waikato to Waitomo’s glowworm caves, then on to Rotorua for geothermal parks and Māori cultural experiences. Continue to Lake Taupō for lakeside scenery and a visit to Huka Falls, before heading into Tongariro National Park for dramatic alpine landscapes and volcanoes. The journey then winds through the boutique wine region of Martinborough, finishing in Wellington, known for its harbour setting, creative culture and standout food scene, with flexibility to slow the pace in key stops along the way.

Christchurch to Queenstown via Mount Cook

A South Island road trip defined by wide skies, glacial lakes, and alpine stillness. From Christchurch, travel across the Canterbury Plains to Lake Tekapo, known for its turquoise water and expansive views. Continue to Aoraki Mount Cook National Park, where short alpine walks reveal glaciers and New Zealand’s highest peak. The road south passes through the golden tussock landscapes of the Mackenzie Country and along the shores of Lake Pukaki before arriving in Queenstown. Experiences along the way include scenic flights, stargazing, heli-hikes, vineyard visits in Central Otago, and lakeside stays that balance the grandeur of the scenery with genuine comfort. We shape this route to allow space for the experiences that matter most to you.

Queenstown to Milford Sound

One of New Zealand’s most dramatic alpine drives, where the journey is as memorable as the destination. Departing Queenstown, the road follows Lake Wakatipu before climbing through the wide valleys and mirror lakes of Fiordland National Park. Waterfalls, rainforest walks, and the Homer Tunnel mark the final approach to Milford Sound. Timing matters on this route. We plan departure hours carefully to avoid peak crowds and allow space for unhurried photo stops. Some travellers prefer to include an overnight stay in Te Anau, allowing an early morning visit to Milford Sound when the fiord is at its quietest. This drive suits travellers drawn to dramatic scenery, wildlife encounters and the feeling of being deep within untouched wilderness.

Road Trip FAQs

Planning a New Zealand road trip often comes with practical questions, from driving distances and timing to accommodation and support along the way. Here are answers to some of the most common ones. If you’d prefer tailored advice, our Travel Specialists can help shape a route that fits your pace and travel style.

New Zealand is a year-round destination. Summer (Dec–Feb) has the longest days and busiest roads, while shoulder seasons (Mar–May and Sep–Nov) often mean fewer crowds and better availability. Winter (Jun–Aug) is great for alpine scenery and ski regions, but you’ll want to plan for shorter daylight hours and occasional road closures in mountain passes.

It depends on whether you’re exploring one island or both. As a general guide, allow 7–10 days for the North Island, 10–14 days for the South Island, and 18–24+ days to cover both. Distances may look short on a map, but roads are often winding and scenic stops add up quickly. If you’d like to go beyond the highlights and travel at a more relaxed pace, you could easily spend 21+ days exploring just one island. If you’re unsure how long to allow, get in touch and we’ll help plan the right route and pace.

Your road trip includes a rental vehicle suited to your route, pre-booked accommodation, and a personalised driving itinerary designed around your interests and preferred pace. Some suggested itineraries already include selected experiences, while others focus on accommodation and routing only. Everything is 100% customisable. Any accommodation, vehicle, or experience you choose will be confirmed and pre-booked before you arrive, so you can travel knowing all the details are taken care of. If plans need adjusting while you’re on the road, you’ll have 24/7 in-country support. You travel independently, with support available if you need it.

Yes. Every Discover New Zealand road trip can be tailored to suit you. You can adjust driving distances, choose different accommodation styles, add distinctive stays, and include experiences such as guided walks, wildlife encounters, scenic cruises, or food and wine experiences. Your itinerary is shaped around how you prefer to travel, whether that means slower mornings, scenic detours, or time set aside for memorable dining and local experiences.

In New Zealand, driving is on the left. Speeds are in km/h, and many highways are narrow, winding two lane roads with limited passing, so allow extra time, take regular breaks, and pull over safely for photos, as the scenery is distracting in the best way. Watch for one lane bridges and changing conditions, especially in alpine areas. If you’d like to explore more remote routes, for example parts of the West Coast, Central Otago, Fiordland, or the East Cape, a bit of extra planning makes a big difference. Fuel stops can be far apart and weather can change quickly. That’s where local advice and thoughtful route planning can really help.
