Lake Tekapo
Turquoise waters, alpine landscapes and some of the clearest night skies in New Zealand.
View tripsA lake shaped by colour and light
Lake Tekapo sits in the Mackenzie region of New Zealand’s South Island, surrounded by wide open landscapes and distant alpine peaks. Known for its striking turquoise colour, created by fine glacial sediment in the water, the lake is one of the most distinctive natural sights in the country.
The small village beside the lake offers a peaceful setting, with walking trails, scenic viewpoints and lakeside accommodation. Nearby, the Church of the Good Shepherd sits at the water’s edge, framing views across the lake toward the Southern Alps.
As the light changes throughout the day, the landscape shifts with it, from bright, reflective blues during the day to clear, star-filled skies after dark. It’s a place defined as much by atmosphere as it is by scenery.
