Omarama

Omarama sits on the Southern end of the large plains in the Mackenzie Basin. This is high country merino sheep farming territory where the dry landscape ideal for New Zealand’s most popular breed. The name Omarama means ‘place of light’ referring to the very clear skies witnessed across the region. Also known worldwide for its rising thermals the area has hosted the world gliding championships and if you are inclined a flight in a glider is possible. Just to the west is the clay cliffs, exposed pinnacles have been weathered into incredible formations. Wrinkly Rams in the town has a great presentation about sheep farming in the region and you can see sheep being sheared or even have a go yourself. The surrounding rivers are also known for their fine fishing qualities.

The Clay Cliffs are natural limestone formations formed by the earth's movement and the abrasive weathering process. With many canyons, ravines, pinnacles and ridges to explore it's a great place to take some short walks. Access is easy (just leave $5 in the honesty box) and is well signposted just around 3 ½ kilometres north of Omarama.

Te Aomarama (“Place of Light”) is at the head of the Waitaki Valley 30km south of Twizel. Hot Tubs Omarama is easy to find at the north western side of Omarama on the Twizel/ Omarama Rd.

Soak in fresh mountain water with no added chemicals. The wooden tubs, which hold up to 4 people have been crafted from sustainably harvested Canadian Western Red Cedar. Enjoy 1.5 hours in your private Hot/Cool Tub with a personal changing room on site. Bring your own towel or hire one. Enjoy complimentary fresh drinking water to ensure you stay hydrated while you soak. Hot Tubs Omarama clean and refill each tub with fresh mountain water before each person or group.
