The Spirit of New Zealand

Reconnect with your spirit on a curated journey through New Zealand’s most restorative landscapes, from the emerald rainforests of the North Island to the crystalline glaciers of the South. Your adventure begins with the grounding energy of Auckland’s wild coasts and the artistic serenity of the Coromandel, before diving deep into the healing geothermal waters and indigenous wisdom of Rotorua. Every moment is designed to balance the senses, whether you are molding clay in a local pottery studio or feeling the powerful pulse of a Māori cultural performance.

Auckland to Coromandel Township

As you leave the Auckland city boundary the landscape changes to lush farmland. You'll cross the fertile Hauraki Plains - one of New Zealand's largest dairy producing regions. Pass the Thames Estuary - a haven for wildlife and shore birds. Arriving into the old gold mining town of Thames, there are two different routes to the east coast of the Coromandel. Either directly over the Coromandel Ranges or north to Coromandel Township along the Pohutukawa Coast (part of the Pacific Coast Highway).

Explore Coromandel Peninsula

The Coromandel Peninsula offers a captivating blend of rugged beauty, rich history, and idyllic coastal charm. Its spine, the Coromandel Ranges, boasts dramatic bush-clad mountains, a legacy of the 1850s gold rush that once swelled towns like Coromandel Township. Today, preservation is key to protecting this pristine environment.
The peninsula's diverse landscapes are striking. The west coast plunges dramatically into the Firth of Thames with steep, pohutukawa-clad cliffs. In contrast, the East Coast is a picture of serene golden sand beaches and secluded inlets, perfect for relaxation.
From exploring historic mining remnants to digging your own hot pool at Hot Water Beach or kayaking around Cathedral Cove, the Coromandel promises a unique New Zealand experience where rugged wilderness meets coastal serenity. It's a place where history resonates, and every turn reveals another breathtaking vista.

The Spirit of New Zealand - Day 5
Pottery Class with Driving Creek Railway & Potteries

Driving Creek Railway and Potteries has become a Coromandel icon. The dream of Barry Brickell was to establish a pottery workshop on his land. Using a railway he would have access to the clay on the land and the pine kiln fuel. Over the next 15 years the railway developed until in 1990 it was finally licensed to carry fare-paying passengers and ever since thousands of visitors have made the trip to Coromandel to experience this unique attraction.
Hop on the wheel for a creative 1.5-hour pottery class and learn wheel throwing from a professional potter, in a place thriving with inspiration, innovation, and rampant creativity! They supply all the clay, the wheel, and aprons to keep your clothes clean! You also get the opportunity to have your works glazed, fired and delivered with a variety of colours at an additional cost.

Kuaotunu to Rotorua

Heading down the east coast you pass through the town of Whitianga and from here you can take the small foot ferry over to Cooks Beach and Flaxmill Bay. A little further south is the famous Hot Water Beach and the holiday town of Hahei. Cathedral Cove is a popular walk and is well worth the effort to view the massive limestone formation aptly named on the golden sand beach. Tairua is also a great location and Paku Hill offers spectacular views over the natural harbour and the Pacific Ocean.
Heading south from the Coromandel Peninsula you pass through the seaside town of Whangamata. A popular location for Kiwi holidaymakers the town boasts one of the best beaches in the region. The old mining town of Waihi still has an operating open cast gold mine and you can view the workings of the Martha Mine from a vantage point signposted from the town centre. For rail enthusiasts the Goldfields Railway operates passenger trains along a scenic and historic section of track towards Waikino.
The route now takes you into the Bay of Plenty and the port town of Tauranga before you head along the scenic Pyes Pa Road to Rotorua. For Lord of the Rings fans a detour to Matamata is recommended as this is the location of Hobbiton. Arriving into Rotorua from the north you are welcomed with some great views of the lake.

Rotorua

Discover the geothermal, adventure, and cultural wonderland of Rotorua. As you explore, you may see steam rising from cracks in the road, bubbling and hissing water in pools along the lake's edge, and the unmistakable smell of Sulfur. Rotorua is rich in Māori culture and history, with many Māori inhabitants recognising the great potential of the volcanic land. For an outdoor adventure, head to The Redwoods and experience the rainforest treetops from high up. There are a few accessible trails for disabled hikers and great biking trails as well. If you’re lucky, you might spot some of New Zealand's native birds, such as the Pīwakawaka (Fantail) and the Tūī. Alternatively, enjoy the Lake Tikitapu Blue Lake Walk or explore Kuirau Park, where you'll find bubbling mud pools and steaming lakes. Don't miss the private thermal reserves such as Te Puia and Wai-O-Tapu, where you can walk among bubbling mud pools, spouting geysers, and Sulfur ponds. Just a few minutes from the town centre, the Agrodome and National Kiwi Hatchery offer an insight into nature. Rotorua's rich Māori culture is a must-see. Spend an evening with Te Pā Tū, complete with a traditional-style dinner or stroll along the lake edge to reach one of the country's oldest Māori villages at Ohinemutu. When hunger strikes, visit Eat Street in Rotorua CBD, a vibrant street lined with delicious eateries and restaurants to satisfy any craving. No visit to Rotorua would be complete without experiencing Rotorua's original tourist attraction - a relaxing spa treatment. This town boasts an array of wellness experiences to unwind in. Whether you are seeking adventure, culture, or relaxation, Rotorua offers an unforgettable experience.

This tour explores 3 of North Canterbury’s boutique vineyards. Travel 45 minutes north of Christchurch through the New Zealand countryside to the Waipara Valley, well known for its warm, dry climate and rich alluvial soils, ideal for superior wine production. Over 40 vineyards and wineries pepper the landscape of the valley, with Pinot Noir, Riesling, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc dominating local plantings. You will stop for tastings at Pegasus Bay, Waipara Springs, Greystone Winery and Waipara Hills Winery. If for any reason one of these wineries is closed on the day or your tour an alternative winery in the Waipara Valley will be included. This activity also has lunch included at Waipara Springs Winery. The platter lunch includes tastes of both a regional and New Zealand flavour and is the perfect accompaniment to some of these wineries fine wines.
