Weta Workshop, Wellington

Read how Weta brought great stories to life and learn about the artists who created the worlds your favourite characters inhabited. Watch the behind-the-scenes film including interviews with Weta co-founders Peter Jackson, Richard Taylor, Tania Rodger and Jamie Selkirk, giving you an insight into the creativity and imagination that goes into crafting the art of Weta.

You then join your hosts for a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the workings of Weta Workshop with a guided tour in their newly opened exhibition space. This is where you get to see some of the props and models Weta have created over the years. You also get to learn about some the processes used to make their cool stuff!

Please keep in mind that many of the projects that Weta Workshop has been involved in do contain scenes and special effects work that may not be suitable for sensitive people.

Guided tours run from 10am to 5pm. Tours take approx 45 minutes.

Where is it located?

The Weta Cave museum is located in Miramar at the south-eastern end of Wellington, New Zealand’s capital city. You can access the Weta Cave from the Corner of Camperdown Road and Weka Street.

Who would enjoy this?

If you love The Lord of the Rings or Hobbiton Movies and have an interest in how movie worlds are created. The Weta Cave will let you discover the people behind the creativity and special effects of some of the top movies in the world.

Interesting Fact?

Richard and Tania along with the co-founders have built up Weta workshops to be a world-leading design and effects service. This all started out in the back room of their flat in Wellington in 1987! They got into the public light in 1988 and they won their first awards in 1993 for ‘Best physical Effects’ but their big break was in 2002 when they won their first BAFTA for ‘Best Make-up’ for the Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring.
