Stretch your legs on these stunning South Island hikes

With stunning blue fiords and majestic mountains towering towards the sky, the South Island of New Zealand offers an escape to true wilderness.

Explore some of the wilds of the South Island with these spectacular day hikes:

Hike Mount Sunday

A short hike of moderate difficulty, this is a great hike for the Lord of the Rings fans! An hour from Christchurch, Mount Sunday posed as Edoras for the filming of the epic trilogy.

The hike take you two kilometres around Mount Sunday, a leisurely walk that allows you to take in the stunning scenery of the Canterbury Plains.

With options to challenge yourself with a longer hike, the Rangitata Valley has plenty of more advanced options for the serious hikers

Explore Franz Josef Glacier

An icon of the west coast - Franz Josef Glacier is a must visit for your hiking holiday. Walk the 90 minute return track up a well-worn shingle path to view the majestic glacier from below.

If you're feeling particularly adventurous, book onto a heli-hike tour and see what it feels like to stand on a glacier. For those with a bit even more daring, head right into the thick of the glacier with an ice-climbing tour.
