Immerse yourself in Wellingtons culture

As New Zealand's capital, Wellington is a thriving city that's alive with art and culture. Quirky makers and creators of all kinds, producing everything from artistic masterpieces to off-the-wall creations, call the city home. You'll find small galleries and boutique stores dotted around the city where you can explore these creations.

If you want to get your art and culture fix when you visit, check out the great Wellington museums and galleries.
Here's our favourite two:

Te Papa Tongarewa – Museum of New Zealand

Te Papa is New Zealand's national museum and houses collections that span art, history, Pacific and Maori history, and the natural New Zealand environment. The displays are creative, engaging, educational, and fun, and it's a wonderful place for the whole family to explore the rich cultural history of New Zealand and its people.

As well as the permanent exhibitions, Te Papa also hosts a constantly changing lineup of temporary displays, alongside regular talks and events. With so much to see, you could find yourself returning to Te Papa a few more times before you're finished in Wellington.

City Gallery Wellington

Another free attraction for your trip to Windy Welly, City Gallery is located in the heart of Wellington, adjacent to the Town Hall and Library in Civic Square.

The gallery hosts an extensive lineup of world-class exhibitions featuring the best of Kiwi and international art. Whether you're an ardent art fanatic or just have a passing interest, you're sure to find something here that appeals to you.

Although there is a diverse range of art on display, the main focus of the gallery is on contemporary visual arts, architecture and design. Current exhibitions include a display of the creative work of Auckland photographer Yvonne Todd, and the eclectic work of American video artist Michael Robinson.
